ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kyle A. McMurtry is a Detroit, Michigan native and recent graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. He envisions his future work focusing on community organizing to fight for the liberation of oppressed people worldwide. In the summer of 2017, Kyle worked at a Black-owned publishing company in Detroit, Porter Media Group.  This experience was what first sparked the idea of creating and publishing a literary work for Black audiences. Kyle decided on writing a children’s book about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), because he is passionate about the empowerment of marginalized groups, especially through education. He hopes Henry’s Going to an HBCU will expose more young people to HBCUs at an earlier age and encourage students to gain the benefits that Black institutions offer. Ultimately, his goal is to broaden the awareness of HBCUs' exceptional education, help increase their sustainability and the empowerment of students of color through the intangible life lessons HBCUs provide.
